Along the slopes of the Sierras between the north and middle forks of the American River is a hotspot where multiple burns occurred.

Colfax Area Maps

Very high hazards are found throughout the Colfax area. Ignitions are scattered throughout the Colfax area. The vast majority of fire types are 'passive crown'.

Near the river and scattered throughout the rest of the Colfax area fires have flame lengths greater than 11 feet. Much of the Colfax area is surrounded by extremely steep grades. Except near the river (federally-owned land), most of the Colfax area is privately-owned.

Greater Colfax Area Fire Safe Council — Map Archives

Except near the river (federally-owned land), most of the Colfax area is privately-owned. Ignitions are scattered throughout the Colfax area. Much of the Colfax area is surrounded by extremely steep grades.
Very high hazards are found throughout the Colfax area. Over 6,700 acres fall into one of the brush models within the National Fire Danger rating system.

Placer County Maps

The Ponderosa Fire Safe Council includes Weimar and Colfax in Placer County, California. The areas around Colfax have very high to moderate fuel hazard rankings. Very high fuel hazards are in the following fire safe council geographies: Foresthill, Iowa Hill, Alta, and Greater Colfax
Most of the area under study has a Sierran mixed conifer vegetation type. The Ponderosa fire of 2001 progressed along the American River, eventually burning over 2400 acres and coming very close to Colfax.
